He'd had a flash of insight that had jolted him awake;
A bolt of
inspiration, heaven sent!
It seemed that
nothing less than Mankind's future was at stake.
He had to write
it down before it went!
He kept a sheet of paper and a pencil by his bed
To capture
clever night thoughts such as these,
And, scribbling
in the darkness while it yet was in his head,
Fell fast
asleep again, his mind at ease.
In some dismay, next day, his gem of wisdom still unseen,
He fretted that
he'd lost the precious line,
But on the
floor he found the page, and read, with some chagrin:
"The
Cosmos is suffused with turpentine!"
