THE MEANING OF EVERYTHING

He'd had a flash of insight that had jolted him awake;
A bolt of inspiration, heaven sent!
It seemed that nothing less than Mankind's future was at stake.
He had to write it down before it went!

He kept a sheet of paper and a pencil by his bed
To capture clever night thoughts such as these,
And, scribbling in the darkness while it yet was in his head,
Fell fast asleep again, his mind at ease.

In some dismay, next day, his gem of wisdom still unseen,
He fretted that he'd lost the precious line,
But on the floor he found the page, and read, with some chagrin:
"The Cosmos is suffused with turpentine!"
